3. This series of workshops will provide you the opportunity to grow in a fun, safe and supportive environment. How and what you decide to implement into your classroom is up to you–personalized learning at its best!

      • There are program-specific aspects–what we as Facilitators collectively deem as core components across the board.
      • There are center-specific aspects–what individual Facilitators include which are practical and relevant to their teachers based on needs and interests.
      • In the TEC21 Workshop Program, how are short- and long-term goals defined?
        • SHORT-TERM – Some sort of technology integrating lesson or activity you want to do with your students THIS MONTH.
        • LONG-TERM – A major change in the way you teach or manage your classroom. “I want to do less of THAT and more of THIS.” It could include a blog, a web site used for flipping your classroom, going paperless with Google Docs, using digital portfolios for student work, integrating project-based learning using a specific tool or tools. There are many possibilities. Think of something you’ve seen or heard about that makes you “spark” and think, “Yeah! I want to do more of THAT!”

4. On our final workshop day, we will gather together for what we have dubbed “Celebration Day”. This particular session’s format is unique among the others in that each of you will share some of the ways in which you implemented your ideas or projects to enhance your teaching and student learning. Think of this as a mini-conference where each of you will have 10-15 minutes to share with the group how your TEC21 experience has impacted your classroom. It’ll be among friends so there’s no need to get worked up about it. Here’s an outline to guide you in your planning – “Celebration Day”. You can share your learning with the group in any way you choose, but we’ll have you start a Google Slide today just as an option. Then if you end up presenting in this way you can add to your slides throughout the school year and avoid the pressure of having to develop a presentation toward the end of the program! Again, remember this is a low-key, no pressure, fun day to share with each other our successes (and yes failures) as well as aspirations you might have for things you want to do the next school year!

5. Are you needing college credit to renew your teaching license? If you are, then you can receive three graduate-level credits at the end of our program through Concordia University, Nebraska. There is no additional work that is above and beyond what you’re doing anyway from month to month so it’s just an added bonus to get credit for your TEC21 experience. Here are the details:

      • The cost is $80/credit hour
      • The online application process opens up on March 1, 2021 and closes May 15, 2021
      • Concordia University is a ministry partner of TEC21 so they will email you from time to time this year to provide you with more information

We look forward in Workshop #1 to begin getting to know each other and taking a high-level look at the TEC21 ministry.

1. Discover TEC21’s vision and mission – what we do, how we do it and most importantly why we do it.

2. Boost your professional learning network by connecting to the TEC21 Educators Group on Facebook.

3. Gain an understanding of the TEC21 road map for the school year culminating at the end of the school year with “Celebration Day”.

4. Explore and discover Google educational applications for the classroom. We’ll learn best practices from each other by sharing how we use some of these resourceful tools in our classrooms.

Google Drive is a file storage and synchronization service developed by Google. Google Drive allows users to store files in the cloud, synchronize files across devices, and share files.

Google Slides lets you collaborate with others creating slides in real time. You can insert text boxes, images, videos, shapes, arrows, equations, and callouts. … You can rearrange slides, change presentation styles, and add speaker notes.

Google Docs is a free Web-based application in which documents can be created, edited and stored online. Files can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection and a full-featured Web browser. … Google Docs is compatible with most presentation software and word processor applications.

Google Sheets is a Web-based application that allows users to create, update and modify spreadsheets and share the data live online. The Ajax-based program is compatible with Microsoft Excel and CSV (comma-separated values) files. Sheets can also be saved as HTML.

Google Drawings is a free, web-based diagramming software developed by Google. It allows users to collaborate and work together in real time to create flowcharts, organizational charts, website wireframes, mind maps, concept maps, and other types of diagrams.

The Chrome Web Store provides places for extensions and other add-ons for the Chrome Browser.  Applications, browser themes and extensions in the store are written in HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Google Apps Script and, from Chrome 14, can use Google Native Client. … The Store has been described as being like Google Play, but for “apps on the web”.

Digital Tools & Resources

How do you save and organize all of your favorite websites? How do you plan on saving all the websites and resources you’ll learn about this year during your TEC21 workshops? Will you use your browser’s tool bar, a spreadsheet, a document, create website to serve as your digital toolbox using Google Sites, or some other handy means? Have you ever heard of Diigo? It’s a bookmarking website that enables you to build your library of resources. You can add the diigolet to your toolbar or you can add the Diigo Chrome extension to your Chrome browser. There is also has a social-bookmarking aspect to it where you can join a group like Lutheran Teachers so when you save a website you have the option to add it to the group for everyone else to have access to. If you’re still trying to find a way to organize your sites that suits you best, you might consider creating a Diigo account by giving it a try!

Padlet.com is an interactive bulletin board. You can create a board and post the URL so students simply click on it, click the +, add an idea. Organize for random notes, single line, columns, or back channel for questions and comments as you teach. Downloads as a spreadsheet too.

Quizlet is an easy-to-use and efficient tool for learning. It has become the largest flashcards and study games website, with more than 5 million free sets of flashcards covering every possible subject, three learning modes, testing, and some games to reinforce learning. You can also make your own flash cards, or better yet have your students make them and share their decks!

Plickers – A powerfully simple tool that lets teachers collect real-time formative assessment data without the need for student devices. Print Plickers Cards online, hand one to each student, they turn the card to indicate choice, you scan their response with the Plickers app. Scan Student Responses. Make sure you’re logged in to the mobile app and website using the same account. Play a Question or Set from the mobile app or from the website. In the mobile app, tap the circle icon to open the scanner. Plickers will instantly scan your students’ cards and record their answers. Print out whole class results or individual reports

Newsela features current events articles where you can control the reading level and assign to your students by creating an account and a class. Grades 2+Newsela is a website dedicated to news and informational text for a wide range of grade levels and content area. Teachers can select one of several reading levels for each article and can also use pre-made quizzes on the material. Articles are continually updated to reflect current news.

Ten Distance Learning Writing Lessons.  Some great short screencasts you can make to teach writer’s workshop remotely! This format can be used for any topic!


AWWapp. A Whiteboard App. Use this virtual whiteboard as you would use one in your classroom. Works well with Zoom. Can create before class, then share the link so all students can add to the board in real time


Ziteboard. Virtual Whiteboard that lets you insert images, PDFs, and mp3’s. Then use the drawing tool to comment as you teach. Collaborative feature to invite student input in real time.


Pear Deck. Add interactive formative assessment slides into your Google Slide presentation to activate every student. Go into Google Slides, Add Ons, Pear Deck, open Pear Deck to select from slides for beginning, middle, and end of the presentation. Then download student responses in a spreadsheet to hear from every student on each question. You have to try this!


ABCYa These apps and games are easy to use and in a variety of subject areas and grade levels K-6. Some products are free; others have a small cost.

Seesaw. Learning Management System that allows students to post their work into a digital portfolio for teacher and parents to provide feedback. Students use built-in annotation tools to capture what they know, including recording their voice reading, telling about a drawing, or sharing their writing. Teacher can share information with all parents or just one child’s. Student icon can be whimsical animal for young children, initials or pictures for older students.

Canonizing the Christian Bible: A Simulation.

Every couple of years I teach a class called “How the Bible Became Holy” (and no, I do not assign my book).  The past few times I have taught it I have concluded with a simulation exercise – a game, really – in which different Christian groups (and the rabbis!) meet to settle on a canon.  Each time I run it I tweak it a bit so the rules are never quite the same as they were previously. This year the class will be divided into two groups and each will run the simulation simultaneously.  My teaching assistant for the course.. will lead one section and I will lead the other.”

An example to use or follow when creating your own gamified simulation to conclude a unit.

I do not teach religion so I stole this idea from another TEC21 facilitator!!


75 Scientific Research Projects You Can Contribute to Online. Monitor local animal populations, identify plants, transcribe women astronomers’ notes, bird-watch and more.

Though it’s true that many field research projects are paused, hundreds of scientists need your help sifting through wildlife camera footage and images of galaxies far, far away, or reading through diaries and field notes from the past.

Plenty of these tools are free and easy enough for children to use. You can look around for projects yourself on Smithsonian Institution’s citizen science volunteer pageNational Geographic’s list of projects and CitizenScience.gov’s catalog of options. Zooniverse is a platform for online-exclusive projects, and Scistarter allows you to restrict your search with parameters, including projects you can do “on a walk,” “at night” or “on a lunch break.” To save you some time, Smithsonian magazine has compiled a collection of dozens of projects you can take part in from home.
