- Please take a piece of cardstock and fold it to make a name card that can stand up on your individual table. Please include on your card the school you currently serve at.
- Feel free to get power cords plugged in and ready to go for the day! If you need assistance with anything don’t hesitate to ask!

- We will watch a quick funny video about professional development as we are getting situated.
- Following shortly there after, we will do an ice breaker activity to begin to get to know one another!
Ice Breaker Activity – Three Truths and a Fabrication
Note: It helps when working with Padlet (the tool we are going to use for this activity) to have a padlet account. If you don’t, take a few minutes and sign up for free HERE.
On the padlet board below, click the “+” icon in the ~September~ column. Create a post that has your name and your four items (see my example). Three of them should be things about you that you are true and that you feel comfortable sharing! One of them should be the fabrication! 🙂
Once you have completed your list of four, go around and comment on other people’s posts and try to guess their fabrication! You can comment directly on their padlet post. Let’s see how many we can guess correctly!

- In the devotional video for today, the narrator poses some pretty powerful questions:
- Am I what I do? (Rhetorical: What do you do?)
- Am I what I’ve achieved? (Rhetorical: What have you achieved?)
- Am I the things I have done right? (Rhetorical: What do you do well or right?)
- Am I defined by the things I have done wrong? (Rhetorical: what have you done wrong?)
- Who does God say that we are? (🤔)
- Let’s watch the video again. When the narrator starts to list “Who God says we are” in his word, I would like you write them down on a piece of paper.
- Look over the list you have. It is ok if you didn’t get them all down. From the ones you wrote down, circle the one that stands out to you today. We will share these out with the group.
- This devotion not only speaks to the more fundamental “Who am I?” but also to the way in which we define ourselves at all levels. As an educator, how do you define who you are as a user of technology within the learning environment?

3. This series of workshops will provide you the opportunity to grow in a fun, safe and supportive environment. How and what you decide to implement into your classroom is up to you–personalized learning at its best!
- There are program-specific aspects–what we as Facilitators collectively deem as core components across the board.
- There are center-specific aspects–what individual Facilitators include which are practical and relevant to their teachers based on needs and interests.
- In the TEC21 Workshop Program, how are short- and long-term goals defined?
- SHORT-TERM – Some sort of technology integrating lesson or activity you want to do with your students THIS MONTH.
- LONG-TERM – A major change in the way you teach or manage your classroom. “I want to do less of THAT and more of THIS.” It could include a blog, a web site used for flipping your classroom, going paperless with Google Docs, using digital portfolios for student work, integrating project-based learning using a specific tool or tools. There are many possibilities. Think of something you’ve seen or heard about that makes you “spark” and think, “Yeah! I want to do more of THAT!”
4. On our final workshop day, we will gather together for what we have dubbed “Celebration Day”. This particular session’s format is unique among the others in that each of you will share some of the ways in which you implemented your ideas or projects to enhance your teaching and student learning. Think of this as a mini-conference where each of you will have 10-15 minutes to share with the group how your TEC21 experience has impacted your classroom. It’ll be among friends so there’s no need to get worked up about it. Here’s an outline to guide you in your planning – “Celebration Day”. You can share your learning with the group in any way you choose, but we’ll have you start a Google Slide today just as an option. Then if you end up presenting in this way you can add to your slides throughout the school year and avoid the pressure of having to develop a presentation toward the end of the program! Again, remember this is a low-key, no pressure, fun day to share with each other our successes (and yes failures) as well as aspirations you might have for things you want to do the next school year!
5. Are you needing college credit to renew your teaching license? If you are, then you can receive three graduate-level credits at the end of our program through Concordia University, Nebraska. There is no additional work that is above and beyond what you’re doing anyway from month to month so it’s just an added bonus to get credit for your TEC21 experience. Here are the details:
- The cost is $80/credit hour
- The online application process opens up on March 1, 2021 and closes May 15, 2021
- Concordia University is a ministry partner of TEC21 so they will email you from time to time this year to provide you with more information

All Things Google
- What is it?
- G-Suite is a collection of apps and services created or acquired by Google and distributed to organizations (educational, non-profit, business) to help with workflow, communication and the creation of work product.
- Managed by a Google Admin(s). Do you know who your Google Admin is (if you have one)?
- Why is it useful?
- For schools and non-profits, the core educational services are free. They can be powerful tools for collaboration and creation. Many started either really simple or too complex, but in the last two years, Google has worked really hard to create a cohesive environment.
- Android, ChromeOS, iOS, MacOS, iPadOS and Windows Compatible.
- You can get great tips and resources by following G-Suite on Youtube. Check out their channel here.
MY TOP 5 MOST USED G-SUITE TOOLS
- This is kind of like “The One Ring to Rule them All!”
- Where you can create, organize and share all your educational documents, sites, forms…
- At one time, we had to learn file storage and management. Those skills are still important today and Google Drive is powerful tool for this. If you haven’t please download Google File Stream OR if your organization hasn’t turned on that feature, please download and install Google Backup and Sync. To know the difference between the two, check out this article.
- Google Classroom is probably the single greatest tool Google has released for the classroom in recent years.
- It isn’t a finished product. Google is continuing the process of refining and growing Google Classroom into a powerful tool for teachers and schools. I run all my classes through Google Classroom.
- New features are being released each year with teachers in mind. See the new feature releases here: Google Product Release Calendar
- Forms is a powerful tool for collecting data both in general and in regards to student assessment. Partner it with sheets and you have something really special. Note: Add-ons to sheets and forms can take these tools to a whole other level of useful. We can cover that more further down the page.
- Many people are surprised that slides is in my top 5 and not google docs. I think slides is more powerful and offers most of the same features as docs plus some.
- Google Slides can be configured so that the page is the same size as a doc. In a Slides presentation you can create visually appealing graphics, insert spreadsheets, charts, videos…etc.
- I think this can be very powerful if you want students to create an interactive science report (insert data from sheets, create graphics to show process, and include video of students running the procedure…etc). It could be powerful for developing good writing. You could have students outline a story and then retell the story through a video embedded in the sheet. The possibilities are endless!
- There are two versions (old and new). The old version was a more robust and harder to use website builder. The new version is layered inside Google Drive and is created like any other google product (docs, sheets, slides, forms).
- The new version is super easy to use. I have found that Google Sites can be a great place to store useful resources for students. It is more permanent that Google Classroom and visually appealing to boot.
- Google Sites also automatically configures to work on any web based device. Here is an example of a site my 6th grade students started to build out collaboratively last year in science as we were studying the solar system.
Core G-Suite Add-Ons
Several years ago, Google gave third party developers the ability to integrate tools, options and useful workflows into Google applications through the use of add-ons and extensions. To be clear, an extension is a tool or feature that gets added to the Google Chrome browser. A add-on (which sometimes works with an extension) is a third party tool that runs from within a G-Suite application like Gmail, Docs, Sheets…etc.
NOTE: Most every add-on requires the use of the Chrome browser. Extensions and add-ons are powerful tools but only really work well when run/installed inside of the Google ecosystem.
Add-ons are defined by the application they extend (the host application). There are two primary types of add-ons: Gmail add-ons and Editor add-ons. Gmail add-ons extend Gmail only. Editor add-ons extend one of the Google Drive editor host applications: Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Slides and Google Forms.
My Recommended Add-Ons (all of which I use/have used)
- Gmail (Click to Browse)
- Google Docs (Click to Browse)
- Doc to Form – build out a form in Google Docs. This is especially great if you want to convert an old text assessment into a modern interactive google form!
- Highlight Tool – You can have students highlight an article. Then they can share out their different highlights by color to a new document.
- Table of Contents – A tool that helps students build out a table of contents. Slightly redundant with the Google Doc (outline tool).
- Template Gallery – Browse pre-constructed templates for Google Docs and load them into your document with ease.
- Google Sheets (Click to Browse)
- Autocrat (my all time favorite add-on!!!!!!!) – You can take information in a sheet that you created or form data generated with a google form and have it auto populate a Google Doc or PDF template.
- Flubaroo – A tool for auto grading google form data that you want to use as an assessment. Google Forms does have a built in quiz option, but Flubaroo is easy to use and for some might offer a better set of options or layout.
- Remove Duplicates – If you are working with large sets of data and need to remove duplicate entries, this is an excellent add-on.
- Table Styles – Like the docs template gallery, this add-on can help you design a Google Sheet that is both visually appealing and professional.
- Google Slides (Click to Browse)
- Nearpod (free version) – This works in conjunction with the free app Nearpod and the online nearpod. Turn any slides presentation into an interactive lesson. Engaging students right on their devices and collecting real time data. Works best when every student has their own device (personal or school owned).
- Pear Deck – This is the BEST add-on ever for Google Slides. You can insert interactive questions, force your presentation onto student screens and have the students interact with your content. It is awesome!
- Flat (music creation – works with docs too) – This is just a fun music creation add-on. If you work with music or know someone that does, share this add-on with them!
- Screencastify for Slides – This works with the extension Screencastify for Google Chrome. You can embed screencast videos you create right into your classroom presentation. Great for demos or for sharing ideas. Excellent for e-learning opportunities!
- Google Forms (Click to Browse)
- Choice Eliminator 2 – This is a fantastic add-on for Google forms that allows options to disappear after they have been selected. This is great if you are trying to get students to sign up for projects and only want a certain number of people studying a concept or idea. The possibilities are endless (until they are eliminated! 😉 )

All Things “Google Chrome”
- While we did talk about G-Suite, it is worth mentioning that Google Chrome is really its own thing.
- Google Chrome started as a browser and has morphed into a complex ecosystem. “Chrome” has now become its own brand with such things as Chromecast, Chromebook, Chromebox and Chrome Stick.
- Chrome Browser can be found on all android and iOS devices. It can also be downloaded onto Mac, Windows and Linux. Depending on the device, you will not get the full “Chrome experience”. For instance, Chrome Browser on an iPhone syncs over all the data (like bookmarks and history) from the cloud, but extensions that I have on my Mac’s Chrome Browser do not apply on the mobile iOS version.
- Chrome has been around since 2009 and it really started to pick up speed as “more than a browser” in 2014 with the major release of HTML5 (our newest web coding language).
- In recent years, Chrome has become better known as ChromeOS and is designed more around an experience.
- ChromeOS is getting (already has in some instances) support for Android and Linux applications.
Why is all of this important? The simple reason is that as we use Google more and more in education, we want to be aware of the potential opportunities we have before us. With ChromeOS supporting Android, the 3 million apps in the Google Play store now can come into play. With HTML5 exploding onto the scene just over 4 years ago, apps and programs are less important and web based applications (i.e. like PhET simulations, Online Gaming, and Video Streaming) are now more prevalent.
This spells out really two trends in education, first, devices are going to matter less and less. Second, we will have more options and creative potential at our fingertips than ever before!

Padlet.com is an interactive bulletin board. You can create a board and post the URL so students simply click on it, click the +, add an idea. Organize for random notes, single line, columns, or back channel for questions and comments as you teach. Downloads as a spreadsheet too.
Plickers – A powerfully simple tool that lets teachers collect real-time formative assessment data without the need for student devices. Print Plickers Cards online, hand one to each student, they turn the card to indicate choice, you scan their response with the Plickers app. Scan Student Responses. Make sure you’re logged in to the mobile app and website using the same account. Play a Question or Set from the mobile app or from the website. In the mobile app, tap the circle icon to open the scanner. Plickers will instantly scan your students’ cards and record their answers. Print out whole class results or individual reports

Since 2013, Cool Green Science has covered the best of conservation science: innovative solutions to the most pressing conservation problems, field reporting on the latest research, adventures from biologists, opinion and commentary, and plenty of bizarre and cool creatures.
Rubistar is an easy to use website where you can either create your own rubrics using templates or select one of the many pre-made rubrics to borrow. You can use rubistar without setting up an account to create a quick rubric and print. If you want to save the rubric, go ahead and create an account.
Timers, charts, name generators, etc…
Have your students learn how to type with a fun and engaging program called Typing club. The free version integrates with Google Classroom so students can be up and typing in no time!

Use links or embed code to show examples of completed projects or video tutorials explaining the digital tool whenever possible.
Free K-12 news source for schools. Lexile leveled articles can be read at a variety of reading levels with the touch of a button so all students can read the same information at a level they can understand. Daily AP news articles, critical thinking questions, Spanish articles, Tech articles. Articles can be printed out if you don’t have 1-1 access.
