Christ, our Lighthouse – Stay connected to Christ through His Word!

1. Each month that we meet, come ready with a goal(s). We talk a lot about long-term goals and short-term goals. Each workshop has a theme that will guide the month’s workshop, but TEC21 works best if you come with an idea that you want to bounce around the room. It could be something simple like, how do I do “this” with Google Forms OR how do I do “something like this” to get my students to engage more in the classroom?
In the TEC21 Workshop Program, how are short- and long-term goals defined?
- SHORT-TERM – Some sort of technology integrating lesson or activity you want to do with your students THIS MONTH.
- LONG-TERM – A major change in the way you teach or manage your classroom. “I want to do less of THAT and more of THIS.” It could include a blog, a web site used for flipping your classroom, going paperless with Google Docs, using digital portfolios for student work, integrating project-based learning using a specific tool or tools. There are many possibilities. Think of something you’ve seen or heard about that makes you “spark” and think, “Yeah! I want to do more of THAT!”
2. Are you needing college credit to renew your teaching license? If you are, then you can receive three graduate-level credits at the end of our program through Concordia University, Nebraska. There is no additional work that is above and beyond what you’re doing anyway from month to month so it’s just an added bonus to get credit for your TEC21 experience. Here are the details:
- The cost is $80/credit hour
- The online application process opens up on March 1, 2021 and closes May 15, 2021
- Concordia University is a ministry partner of TEC21 so they will email you from time to time this year to provide you with more information
3. The next workshop date is scheduled for Thursday, November 12, 2020. Click here to add a reminder to your calendar that TEC21 will be that week in November.
4. If you have never gone to a technology conference or connected with an educator technology group/organization I would encourage a few of the following options

- Note: Annual fall conference held near Indy.

- Michigan Association of Computer User Learning (MACUL)

- International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE)
- Note: Annual International Conference Held Each Summer.

What is it? Digital storytelling is the practice of combining narrative with digital content, including images, sound, and video, to create a short movie, typically with a strong emotional component.

“Digital storytelling has emerged as a fundamental, cross-curricular technique that provides structure for both sharing and understanding new information. It has become an essential way of providing information and enhancing education…by making abstract or conceptual content more understandable. In all disciplines, it offers more ways to engage students and enrich learning through the inclusion of digital media that represents, illustrates, and demonstrates. Digital storytelling brings together text, graphics, audio, and video around a chosen theme, often with a specific point of view. Bernard Robin observes that a digital story may be a personal tale, a depiction of a historical event, or simply a way to creatively impart information or provide instruction. In the classroom, they can also foster collaboration when students are able to work in groups, and enhance the student experience through a personal sense of accomplishment (Robin, 2006). The National Council of Teachers of English in 2003, challenged teachers to develop instructional strategies for students to master composing in nonprint media that could include any combination of visual art, motion (video and film), graphics, text, and sound—all of which are frequently written and read in nonlinear fashion (Porter, 2008, p. 11). Common Core writing standards require writing and publishing using digital tools beginning already in Kindergarten and continuing through Grade 12.
Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and present the relationships between information and ideas efficiently as well as to interact and collaborate with others.

Paper Slide Videos are a quick way to do a one-take recording of students teaching information. Use your iPad or iPhone in video mode and slide the prepared papers in one at a time as you talk about each, telling the story of what you learned or wrote

#3: Stop Motion
A stopmotion video is a series of still images strung together at a rapid rate resulting in an onscreen animation. Below is an example of one a past student-created using Stopmotion Studios. It is a free app that simple to use. The video below takes advantage of some of the paid add-on features.

#4: Google Slides
Pick your own “Adventure” stories can be great and depending on which age level you teach, really engaging. You could have the students research a character from a story and do a pick your own adventure story as if they were writing a sequel. You can have the students use this to collaboratively write a narrative with other students. There are lots of options and many platforms to do this type of storytelling. Many teachers and students build “Pick Your Own Adventure” stories in Google Sites and Forms as well.
ClipChamp is a great online video editor that has many free features. For students on many different devices (including Chromebooks), video editing and creation can be a little bit more challenging. There are several really great video creation tools in the resources below. However, if you click on the button below, you can see a video I made in 20 minutes using ClipChamp.

Digital Citizenship Integration
Whether students are learning in-person, remotely or in hybrid scenarios, online learning activities are a part of the education process. As educational leaders, we have the extraordinary opportunity to be a positive influence in their lives when it comes to modeling and teaching them about digital citizenship. Clipchamp is a video tool collection for G Suite & G Suite for Education. It lets you and your G Suite users record, compress, convert, edit, upload, collect, save and share video files. Clipchamp works with your existing Google Apps infrastructure and integrates with Google Drive, YouTube, Facebook and Vimeo.
Have you ever heard of Genius Hour? Listed below are several resources to help understand what it is all about and why some teachers have been integrating this project-based learning strategy into their classrooms. Jerrita Staehr, one of our workshop facilitators, created all of the necessary assets for TEC21 Teachers to use either for themselves during their TEC21 experience or to make copies and adapt them to use with their students. ToonTastic is both an app and a Google Play app on Chromebooks. It lets you create animated stories by selecting settings and characters, then using your voice to tell the story as you move the characters. Select Historical Films, Mysteries, Social Studies, School Reports, Documentaries, and more! Look fabulous.
TouchCast Studio: Annotate, explain and present anything easily and quickly with TouchCast Studio. Add webpages, files, images, videos… nearly anything! Then record or live stream* and share across the web.

Vizmato is an easy to use Movie maker, that lets you add filters, themes, music, effects, and text to make your videos super cool. Share these videos with your friends on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Whatsapp, and other social media channels are possible.
YouTube is not just a place for you to “watch videos,” but with your Google account, you have a YouTube channel. You could use to have your kiddos create a video and then share private link with parents!

- Digital: Engage your students in a digital storytelling activity or project. Share your experience by posting for others to see!
- Social: Post a question, an answer, a resource, a picture of your students working on digital storytelling, or an example of a student project to the TEC21 Educators Group on Facebook.
- Spiritual: Be a resource to at least one new person on your faculty before we meet again.
