Dear TEC21 Participants, 

Oh give thanks unto the Lord!

It’s always at about this time of the year that I find myself extra thankful for the TEC21 ministry. Perhaps it’s because the workshop program is well on it’s way during another school term or maybe it’s because Thanksgiving is right around the corner! Either way, I am so thankful for the MANY ways God has blessed our work over the past 12 years. 

First, I want to thank you for joining us this year and for all that you do for Lutheran school ministries and the proclamation of the gospel. Thank you for modeling to your students your desire to continue to learn for their sake. It is my prayer that the relationships you are forming and the learning that is taking place as you gather together each month through our workshop program has been and will continue to be a blessing to both you personally and to your teaching ministry not only for this year, but for many years to come. Personally, I find that being able to connect with other teachers is vital to my teaching ministry. It is a boost to my mental and spiritual health. I love learning with and from others. The relationships I have made through TEC21 help to keep me feeling fresh and excited to teach each year. I hope this is the case for you, too! If it is, I’d like to ask you for your help. 

The facilitators and I have begun forming our next cohorts that will begin in September of 2021. Personal testimony goes a long way, so I would be most grateful if you would help us by thinking of a fellow teacher or teachers that you could encourage to register for Season 13? They could be teachers from your school or any other school for that matter. With your help we will be able to impact more teachers (and their students) for the sake of the gospel. I thank you in advance for any support of our efforts that you can give to us.

Let’s take some time to reflect on last month’s TEC21 Challenges and share experiences. Share a success, a challenge you experienced or a lesson learned. (Look to your participants’ September Reflection Responses to help guide you.)

1. Explore a variety of digital tools and learning activities to use in order to assess student progress and understanding.

2. Create a digital assessment activity which could be incorporated into an upcoming lesson or unit.

3. Discover the educational value of engaging students in gamification activities in today’s classroom.

Digital Assessment Strategies

Formative Assessment

Socrative – Ask a variety of questions throughout your lessons: multiple choice, true-false, and short answer. Write questions out in advance or ask orally on the go. All responses record and can be displayed on the screen during the lesson to get every student response. Then download all data in a spreadsheet to see which students need additional instruction and practice.  Student Log In   Room: LAUNCHPAD

Google Forms – Build a quiz or survey in Google Drive. Allows a variety of questions including short answer. Collates data and provides spreadsheet.

EdPuzzle – A site that allows users to select a video and customize it by editing, cropping, recording audio, and adding questions to make an engaging presentation or lesson. Take a look at this Math example video!

Portfolio

Google Folders Have each student set up a Google account and create a folder for your course so they log in once and save to the cloud. Sharing the folder once with you as instructor allows you to view everything in the folder without re-sharing.

Authentic

Adobe Spark Page Having students create projects using technology to demonstrate learning is authentic assessment. Documenting a process using online tools empowers students to tell what they did and what they learned. Allowing them to choose the tool adds to the authenticity. Taking pictures or video of an actual process they do and reporting that as learning is authentic.

Sutori Have students create a multimedia rich timeline individually or collaboratively.

Gaming

Gimkit is a classroom game-show platform where students compete by answering questions on their electronic devices. Instead of earning points, students earn virtual currency, which they can “invest” during the game to boost their score.

Kahoot – A collection of questions on specific topics. Created by teachers, students, business-people and social users, they are asked in real-time, to an unlimited number of “players”, creating a social, fun and game-like learning environment. Let’s give it a try: Kahoot.it login

Digital Storytelling Revisited

Literary Basis

“Digital storytelling has emerged as a fundamental, cross-curricular technique that provides structure for both sharing and understanding new information. It has become an essential way of providing information and enhancing education…by making abstract or conceptual content more understandable. In all disciplines, it offers more ways to engage students and enrich learning through the inclusion of digital media that represents, illustrates, and demonstrates. Digital storytelling brings together text, graphics, audio, and video around a chosen theme, often with a specific point of view. Bernard Robin observes that a digital story may be a personal tale, a depiction of a historical event, or simply a way to creatively impart information or provide instruction. In the classroom, they can also foster collaboration when students are able to work in groups, and enhance the student experience through a personal sense of accomplishment (Robin, 2006). The National Council of Teachers of English in 2003, challenged teachers to develop instructional strategies for students to master composing in nonprint media that could include any combination of visual art, motion (video and film), graphics, text, and sound—all of which are frequently written and read in nonlinear fashion (Porter, 2008, p. 11). Common Core writing standards require writing and publishing using digital tools beginning already in Kindergarten and continuing through Grade 12.

With guidance and support from adults, explore and use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.

Digital Tools & Resources

Padlet.com is an interactive bulletin board. You can create a board and post the URL so students simply click on it, click the +, add an idea. Organize for random notes, single line, columns, or back channel for questions and comments as you teach. Downloads as a spreadsheet too.

Flipgrid is the leading video discussion platform used by millions of PreK to PhD educators, students, families, and organizations in more than 150 countries! Create a Grid (that’s your classroom or group), add Topics to spark the discussion, and your community builds a dialogue as they share short video responses. Helps build community in online spaces.  This is a good way to have students respond visually in class.

Google Forms Create a survey, quiz, response tool with options including Multiple Choice, TF, Short Answer, Paragraph Responses, Drop Down List, Check Boxes, Linear Scale, and more. Responses automatically download in a spreadsheet.

Kahoot – A collection of questions on specific topics. Created by teachers, students, business-people and social users, they are asked in real-time, to an unlimited number of “players”, creating a social, fun and game-like learning environment. Check the Discover heading to check for the millions of public Kahoots already made that you can edit or use as they are. Or create your own! Add a picture to make the quiz visually motivating.

Transform your ideas into stunning visual demonstrations of learning with Adobe Spark! Create impactful social graphics, web pages, and short videos in minutes with Adobe Spark. Easily add photos, video clips, icons, or your own voice. Select from professional-quality soundtracks and cinematic motion—and voila!

Online Jeopardy game : Factile provides a very professional Jeopardy game format that you, or your students, can easily create questions and answers for to review or assess learning. Check the public games already made to see if they meet your needs.


Fake Social Media Templates: Create Fake Facebook, Twitter, Texting, and Snapchat using these templates. Students can create a Fake account for a person in your discipline and post from their point of view.


Pl@ntNet App: Pl@ntNet allows users of iOS and Android devices to identify plants simply by photographing them with their smartphones. Pl@ntNet is also a citizen-science project: all the plants that users photograph are collected and analyzed by scientists around the world to better understand the evolution of plant biodiversity and better preserve it. Scientists especially need Pl@ntNet’s users to inventory the wild plants in nature, including those that grow on the sidewalks of cities or in the middle of a vegetable garden. At present Pl@ntNet makes it possible to recognize about 20,000 species—a long way from the 360,000 species living on Earth, but Pl@ntNet is getting richer every day thanks to the contributions of users. Students’ observations may one day join the photo gallery illustrating the species in the application!

Ignite Presentations! IGNITE IS A SERIES OF SPEEDY PRESENTATIONS. Presenters get 20 slides, which automatically advance every 15 seconds. The result is a fast and fun presentation which lasts just 5 minutes. Ignite events are held in cities around the world. GoClass – Deliver interactive lessons right to kids’ mobile devices and tablets
