Thankfulness

I am thankful for dirty dishes in my sink because this means I have food to eat, something on which to eat it, and running water/dishwasher to clean them.

This is a weird thing for which to be thankful. But, it does help put things into perspective, make us appreciate things, and put a positive spin on an unpleasant situation.

What are some weird things that you are thankful for?

Devotion

  • Colossians 3:17 – And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
  • 1 Chronicles 16:34 – Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus

Dear TEC21 Participants, 

Oh give thanks unto the Lord!

It’s always at about this time of the year that I find myself extra thankful for the TEC21 ministry. Perhaps it’s because the workshop program is well on it’s way during another school term or maybe it’s because Thanksgiving is right around the corner! Either way, I am so thankful for the MANY ways God has blessed our work over the past 12 years. 

First, I want to thank you for joining us this year and for all that you do for Lutheran school ministries and the proclamation of the gospel. Thank you for modeling to your students your desire to continue to learn for their sake. It is my prayer that the relationships you are forming and the learning that is taking place as you gather together each month through our workshop program has been and will continue to be a blessing to both you personally and to your teaching ministry not only for this year, but for many years to come. Personally, I find that being able to connect with other teachers is vital to my teaching ministry. It is a boost to my mental and spiritual health. I love learning with and from others. The relationships I have made through TEC21 help to keep me feeling fresh and excited to teach each year. I hope this is the case for you, too! If it is, I’d like to ask you for your help. 

The facilitators and I have begun forming our next cohorts that will begin in September of 2021. Personal testimony goes a long way, so I would be most grateful if you would help us by thinking of a fellow teacher or teachers that you could encourage to register for Season 13? They could be teachers from your school or any other school for that matter. With your help we will be able to impact more teachers (and their students) for the sake of the gospel. I thank you in advance for any support of our efforts that you can give to us.

Let’s take some time to reflect on last month’s TEC21 Challenges and share experiences. Share a success, a challenge you experienced or a lesson learned.

Goals

1. Explore a variety of digital tools and learning activities to use in order to assess student progress and understanding.

2. Create a digital assessment activity which could be incorporated into an upcoming lesson or unit.

3. Discover the educational value of engaging students in gamification activities in today’s classroom.

Digital Assessment Strategies

Formative Assessment
  • Socrative – Allows teachers to create simple quizzes that students can take quickly on laptops, classroom tablet computers or their own smartphones.
  • Plickers – A powerfully simple tool that lets teachers collect real-time formative assessment data without the need for student devices.
  • Google Slides – Presenter View allows you to drop questions into your presentation during presenting.
  • EdPuzzle – A site that allows users to select a video and customize it by editing, cropping, recording audio, and adding questions to make an engaging presentation or lesson.
Gaming
  • Kahoot – A collection of questions on specific topics. Created by teachers, students, business-people and social users, they are asked in real-time, to an unlimited number of “players”, creating a social, fun and game-like learning environment.
  • Quizizz – An alternative to Kahoot, with a few different features.
  • Quizalize – A student response system (similar to Kahoot, Quizizz, Class Responder, etc.) that really engages students.
Portfolio
  • Seesaw – A student-driven digital portfolio that empowers students to independently document what they are learning at school. FEATURES: Easily Capture Student Learning in Any Form ∙ Students can use photos, videos, drawings, text notes, links to show what they know.
  • Student Portfolio Apps & Websites – Compiled by Common Sense Media, this useful article provides you with a chart of options for online portfolios for students complete with grade levels, platforms, and pricing!
Authentic
  • Quizlet – Create electronic flashcards for review.
Educational Use Resources
  • Sound FX – Free Sound Effects and Clips

Breakout EDU

Breakout EDU is an immersive learning games platform. Breakout EDU games consist of a combination of physical and digital puzzle elements that must be solved in a set amount of time. Players of all ages are challenged to open the locked Breakout EDU box using critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity.

GooseChase EDU is a web-based platform that creates scavenger hunts for an app of the same name on mobile (iOS and Android) devices. First, teachers go to the website to create a new game with a basic description. … Each mission is a scavenger hunt clue, which comes in three types: photo/video, text, or location.

Digital Tools & Resources

Flippity is a series of web apps that can easily turn a google spreadsheet into a set of online Flashcards or Quiz Show. There are cards for helping a teacher create random groups, or mix and match activities

ClassDojo is a communication app for the classroom. It connects teachers, parents, and students who use it to share photos, videos, and messages throughout the school day. They use ClassDojo to work together as a team, share in the classroom experience, and bring big ideas to life in their classrooms and homes.

Classkick is a free app that students work on and get help instantly from their teacher and peers. Students work on assignments with their Chromebooks, laptops, or iPads while getting help from teachers and peers instantly. … Best of all, students can help each other anonymously.

Breakout EDU is a game-based learning activity that requires critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication. You may purchase a kit that contains locks, boxes, and items to play 100s of learning games in all subjects. Or create your own digital game using a variety of locks.

Edpuzzle is an easy way to focus students when assigning videos. It is a great tool to use when flipping learning.

Web-based

Free Rice is an online internet game that donates 20 grains of rice to the World Food Programme (WFP) for every word that is correctly defined. WFP, the United Nations frontline organization fighting hunger, distributes the rice to the hungry.


Line Rider is an internet game, with versions available for Microsoft Silverlight and Flash. It was originally created in September 2006 by Boštjan Čadež (also known as “fšk”), a Slovenian student.

There are a lot of neat examples of talented people taking this basic Flash piece and making amazing pieces of art.

Math Facts Pro is a web-based math facts program that allows students to practice individually and allows the teacher to monitor student progress. (Cost: about $1 a student per year)


SpellingCity.com allows students to practice both vocabulary and spelling independently as well as giving teachers the tools to track a student’s progress. (Pay per class $60)


Prezi is a web-based program that takes any PowerPoint presentation to the next level. It is a great resource for both teachers and students.


Mindmup is a mind map tool that can be used as a formative assessment.


Gimkit – Live quiz learning game.  Like a game show for the classroom. Students earn “money” to use within the game


15 Tools for Formative Assessment – Some digital assessment tools have pre-made quizzes, questions, and slideshows you can use immediately. Others assume you will enter your own questions. A number of them we have discussed.

TEC21 Challenges

  1. Digital: Develop and incorporate a digital assessment activity to use with your students in a lesson or unit you’ll be teaching before we meet again in January.
  2. Social: Post to TEC21 Educators Group on Facebook. It can be a comment, an answer to someone’s question, a resource, a picture of you teaching and/or your students learning, or a sample of a digital assessment you used with your students.
