Getting Connected



Storms. Powerful forces of nature. One definition goes as such “a disturbed or agitated state”.

I think we can all say that COVID-19 seems like its own kind of storm. Daily, weekly and now monthly we find our lives disturbed and our tempers agitated. Not all is bad of course. More time with (immediate) family, time to get projects done around the house…etc are all great benefits and a silver lining. Yet, there is still a lingering unknown that goes with the storm of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If we read the scriptures there is something about storms that we know to be true, they are a certainty. Once upon a time, humans from times past knew this fundamental truth also. Storms were unavoidable, so they designed and built thousands of lighthouses worldwide to protect those that found themselves stuck out in the storm.

Interesting fact about my family, we love lighthouses! My wife and I, along with our family travel to see and find lighthouses every summer. While lighthouses come in all shapes and sizes, there is one thing that holds very true. They were designed to be a beacon of hope in an otherwise hopeless situation. They were the light, that cut through the darkness. They were the unwavering tower of hope in a shifting and uncertain sea.

COVID-19 has impacted our student’s, their families and the lives of those closest to us. We may not have lost loved ones (and then again maybe you have) but the fact is that many people we know are going through some storm right now.

In the Psalms it is written:

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and fortress: my God; in Him will I trust. Surely He shall deliver me.” –Psalm 91:1-3

Storms are a certainty. Whether it be COVID-19, or some other uncertain worldly situation, we are guaranteed storms. Yet, there is great hope because Christ, our solid rock, is that beacon and light that cuts through the darkness. He is our refuge and fortress. Not only that, He shares with us through the words of James in the New Testament this great truth:

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” –James 1:2-4

A couple of weeks ago, while worshiping via live stream on Sunday morning, I started to cry and I couldn’t stop. I balled like a child that had just dropped something heavy on their little toe. I realized just how much I missed time with my faith family. I had such a great yearning to be in church, singing in the presence of all our fellow saints. As I had time to dwell on that experience, I realized that it was a beautiful moment. It was a blessing during this trying time. This pandemic has helped me to see what I have taken for granted, and not only that, but helped me to feel that longing to be in the heavenly realm in the presence of God’s glory worshiping with the saints in eternity.

No matter what storm we face, there will come a time when we will stand with all believers from all of time and worship, like we have never worshiped before and in that moment we will be in the presence of our great and glorious lighthouse, of Christ, our Lord and savior who cuts through the storm and holds us safe in the palm of his hand. Today he holds us, tomorrow he holds us, and forever he will hold us.


Technology Conferences

If you have never gone to a technology conference or connected with an educator technology group/organization I would encourage a few of the following options


Concordia University has extended the application deadline to May 15. Pass/Fail grades will be submitted to Concordia following the application deadline for those who have applied to receive graduate-level credit. Emails will then be sent to all applicants from the TEC21 Office providing them with their pass/fail grade and information on how to request a transcript from Concordia University, Nebraska if needed.

How to Obtain 3 Graduate-level Credits Through Your TEC21 Experience

Will you be needing to renew your teaching license soon? Are you wanting to advance a step on your school’s salary schedule? Are you thinking about pursuing a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, consider applying to Concordia University, Nebraska, to receive three graduate-level credits for your TEC21 experience. There is no additional work that is required of you and the process is simple. The online application is open now and runs through May 15, 2020. Follow these four short steps to apply:

      1. First, select the “Apply Here” link below to create an account.
      2. Next, complete the fields. Where it asks for Academic Level, select “Non-Degree Coursework”. Where it asks for Entry Term, select “Summer Semester 2020”. After completing the remaining fields, select “Create Account”.
      3. Now, check your email for confirmation that your application came through successfully.
      4. Lastly, select the link provided in the confirmation email to make your online payment in the amount of $240 ($80/credit hour) using a debit or credit card.
      5. That’s it! You’re done!

If you ever have questions regarding how these three graduate-level credits could be applied to a master’s degree program, contact Anna Boriack, Director of Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, Instructional Innovation Specialist. She will be happy to help you. Her email address is Concordia University, Nebraska is a ministry partner of TEC21, so they may email you from time to time to share opportunities of how these credits could be applied toward graduate-level programs they offer.

Please note: The opportunity detailed above is optional. Additionally, all TEC21 participants will receive a certificate on the final workshop day stating 35 professional development hours have been completed through the TEC21 Workshop Program. How state board of education departments and the 35 LCMS districts recognize these 35 hours of professional development vary from state to state and district to district. (For example, see how the Kansas District’s (of the LCMS) Licensure Renewal has a distinct process in place for the teachers serving in this district.) So, be sure to contact your respective state’s board of education department or your LCMS district office if you have any questions on how to renew your certificate or license using your TEC21 experience!

Mini-conference Style Presentations

This school year is coming to a close in a way like we’ve never experienced before. We (the facilitators) commend all of you for rising to the challenge to continue delivering lessons and sharing the Gospel message with your students and their families. Badge Maker. Badges are all the rage. Let this website help you and your students make a special badge to recognize the achievements of each child!

But what about creating 3D? Most 3D authoring tools have incredibly steep learning curves. Gentle Slope 3D changes everything. PBS produced 60-second videos on each president. It’s a fun way to summarize each presidency. Could your students then make their own 60-second video on a topic you are studying and share!
