1.  In September, we shared ways in which TEC21 facilitators and teachers connect online to further build and strengthen their professional learning networks. With the start of the second semester, what a great time to reflect on the benefits of being able to gather together for these monthly sessions to be trained, equipped, encouraged and supported. We hope the relationships that are being built will continue to be a blessing to your teaching ministry for many years to come! #LutheranSchoolsThrive

2. Looking all the way back to November’s TEC21 Challenges, did anyone create and use a digital assessment activity? What happened? What obstacles (if any) did you and your students have to resolve? How did your students respond to your use of a digital assessment? What successes did you and your students experience?
3. Have you made any New Year’s Professional Growth Resolutions? They might come in handy for “Celebration Day” in May. Share with the group or the person next to you. Maybe you can become an accountability partner with someone to help each other meet your goal. Do you remember the working definitions for short- and long-term goals we shared with you back in September?
  • SHORT-TERM – Some sort of technology integrating lesson or activity you want to do with your students THIS MONTH.
  • LONG-TERM – A major change in the way you teach or manage your classroom. “I want to do less of THAT and more of THIS.” It could include a blog, a website used for flipping your classroom, going paperless with Google Docs, using digital portfolios for student work, integrating project based learning using a specific tool or tools. There are many possibilities. Think of something you’ve seen or heard about that makes you “spark” and think, “Yeah! I want to do more of THAT!”

Goals

1. Explore the educational value of teacher- and student-centered collaboration.
2. Create a learning activity using collaborative tools and resources to enrich an upcoming lesson or unit you will be teaching.
3. Identify a digital tool, a teaching strategy or learning activity to share with another teacher when you return to your school.

Collaborative Learning Activities

Teachers have been collaborating in a variety of ways for years. For example, have you ever had your students write letters to pen pals, missionaries, or perhaps participate in a Flat Stanley project? Many teachers still engage their students in these types of fun and meaningful lessons! Can you imagine, however, the opportunities you have to enhance these kinds of rich, experiential learning activities by using some of the remarkable digital tools and resources available to us in the classroom today?
There are a number of ways to virtually connect your students with other students or experts outside your classroom walls. Likewise, there are a variety of digital tools that are designed with features that afford students the capability to collaborate in some amazing ways. What kinds of learning activities are possible today when we use things like Skype (or other video chat tool), Flipgrid, Google Slides, Padlet, etc.? How have you used any of these with your students?
Today, let’s do something incredibly fascinating. Let’s have all 159 TEC21 teachers (+ the TEC21 Facilitators) in our 27 cohorts this year engage in three collaborative learning activities! Our hope is that through these experiences, each of us will leave here today encouraged and inspired to try something new or different with our students!
Collaborative Activity #1 – Participate in a Mystery Skype Call with another TEC21 cohort
Have you ever Skyped with another classroom before?
Tips for a successful Mystery Skype experience:
  1. Find a teacher who wants to do a Mystery Skype.
  2. Skype with each other first (without students) to practice using the platform and to plan for the activity.
  3. Prepare your students with how the activity works, make assignments for the various roles, and GO FOR IT!
Many supplemental resources (age appropriate) can be found on the web to help plan for a successful lesson. For an example, here is one to get you started: Check out Skype–etiquette.

ThingLink is a free and user friendly digital tool that provides users with the ability to turn any image into an interactive graphic. Create multiple “hot spots” on specific parts of an image and turn that image into a multimedia launcher.
Google Maps is a web mapping service developed by Google. It offers satellite imagery, street maps, 360° panoramic views of streets (Street View), real-time traffic conditions (Google Traffic), and route planning for traveling by foot, car, bicycle (in beta), or public transportation.
Google My Maps is a service launched by Google that enables users to create custom maps for personal use or sharing. Users can add points, lines, and shapes on top of Google Maps.
bubbl.us is a web-based mind mapping tool, useful for organizing ideas, brainstorming, analyzing relationships, and visualizing data. Simple interface, with basic and easily understood functionality. Free to try without creating an account.
Classroom Screen provides classroom basics such as a timer, sound level, random names and more.
Write About is a classroom writing community and publishing platform built for teachers.  Get your writers started with the many creative starters and questions.

Expii Solve is a website with creative math puzzles that challenge you to think differently. Can you solve this one?

Google Flat is the online and collaborative sheet music editor that lets you create music scores and guitar tabs with your friends. Create and edit your music score documents with your Chrome browser in realtime with your friends or colleagues. … You can open your music documents in a Google Hangout.  Create an account or sign in here!

Twiddla allows you to mark up websites, graphics, and photos, or start drawing on a blank canvas. Browse the web with your students or make that remote tutoring session more productive than ever. No plug-ins, downloads, or firewall voodoo – it’s all here, ready to go when you are. Browser-agnostic, user-friendly.

11 Creative Ways to Use Hyperdocs   Are you just using Google Docs as a substitute for a worksheet? Why not use the full capabilities of Google Docs by creating a HyperDoc? If you are not familiar with the term, HyperDoc, it essentially means “an interactive Google Doc that guides students through innovative and inquiry-based learning lessons using directions, graphic organizers, links, and possible collaboration. The learning can be made to be self directed, and students can work at their own pace” (Google Training Center, 2016).

Chromebook App Hub Explore ideas and apps to use with chromebooks that inspire students to be better digital citizens, scientists and world explorers.

3 Backchannel Chat Websites Since the backchannel site Today’s Meet is gone, here is an article with reviews of three apps that you could use as a backchannel.

Matific is a free elementary math product that consists of engaging activities and games that are linked to content from the most popular math textbooks. It is available through a browser, native iPhone and iPad apps, as well as native Android smartphone and tablet apps.

Mathigon is a math site with lots of interactive resources.  You can set up a free account with access to assign topics to a class or just use the resources as a supplement to teaching.  It is Google Classroom compatible- added bonus!

TEC21 Challenges

  1. Digital: Engage your students in a collaborative learning activity to enrich a lesson or unit. You might even consider teaming with another teacher on your faculty or one from anywhere around the world.
  2. Social: Post to the TEC21 Educators Group on Facebook. It can be a comment, an answer to someone’s question, a resource, or a picture of you and your students engaging in a collaborative learning activity.
  3. Spiritual: Be a resource for one of your colleagues at your school by sharing a digital tool, a teaching strategy or learning activity.
  4. Season 13 cohorts are forming now! Please encourage a fellow teacher to join us next year! Personal testimonies go a long way, so we would be most grateful if you would help us by thinking of a fellow teacher or teachers that you could encourage to register for the 2021/2022 school year. They could be teachers from your school or any other school for that matter. With your help we will be able to impact more teachers and their students for the sake of the gospel. Share with them how valuable it’s been to you to be able to connect with other teachers serving in Lutheran schools outside of your school building and the positive impact it’s having on you and your students.
