2. Looking all the way back to November’s TEC21 Challenges, did anyone participate in the Hour of Code in December? What happened? What obstacles (if any) did you and your students have to resolve? How did your students respond to the coding activities? What successes did you and your students experience?

3. Have you made any New Year’s Professional Growth Resolutions? They might come in handy for “Celebration Day” in May. Share with the group or the person next to you. Maybe you can become an accountability partner with someone to help each other meet your goal. Do you remember the working definitions for short- and long-term goals we shared with you back in September?

  • SHORT-TERM – Some sort of technology integrating lesson or activity you want to do with your students THIS MONTH.
  • LONG-TERM – A major change in the way you teach or manage your classroom. “I want to do less of THAT and more of THIS.” It could include a blog, a website used for flipping your classroom, going paperless with Google Docs, using digital portfolios for student work, integrating project based learning using a specific tool or tools. There are many possibilities. Think of something you’ve seen or heard about that makes you “spark” and think, “Yeah! I want to do more of THAT!”

Goals

1. Explore the educational value of teacher- and student-centered collaboration.

2. Create a learning activity using collaborative tools and resources to enrich an upcoming lesson or unit you will be teaching.

3. Identify a digital tool, a teaching strategy, or learning activity to share with another teacher when you return to your school.

Collaborative Learning Activities

Teachers have been collaborating in a variety of ways for years. For example, have you ever had your students write letters to pen pals, missionaries, or perhaps participate in a Flat Stanley project? Many teachers still engage their students in these types of fun and meaningful lessons! Can you imagine, however, the opportunities you have to enhance these kinds of rich, experiential learning activities by using some of the remarkable digital tools and resources available to us in the classroom today?

There are a number of ways to virtually connect your students with other students or experts outside your classroom walls. Likewise, there are a variety of digital tools that are designed with features that afford students the capability to collaborate in some amazing ways. What kinds of learning activities are possible today when we use things like Skype (or other video chat tool), Flipgrid, Google Slides, Padlet, etc.? How have you used any of these with your students?

Today, let’s do something incredibly fascinating. Let’s have all 169 TEC21 teachers (+ the TEC21 Facilitators) in our 26 cohorts this year engage in three collaborative learning activities! Our hope is that through these experiences, each of us will leave here today encouraged and inspired to try something new or different with our students!

Collaborative Activity #1 – Participate in a Mystery Skype Call with another TEC21 cohort

Have you ever Skyped with another classroom before?

Tips for a successful Mystery Skype experience:

  1. Find a teacher who wants to do a Mystery Skype.
  2. Skype with each other first (without students) to practice using the platform and to plan for the activity.
  3. Prepare your students with how the activity works, make assignments for the various roles, and GO FOR IT!

Genius Hour

Genius Hour Unit 3: The Pitch

You want to “sell” your idea in a creative and interesting way. Think about this as a commercial for your idea that unveils your genius plan! You will have 1-2 minutes.

Include the following:

  • Your name
  • Reasons you chose the project (story, history, definition, interest, etc.)
  • Materials/resources/technology tools needed
  • First three steps to get started
  • Obstacles you may face in the process
  • Explain how the project enhances learning.

Your presentation may be formatted in one of the following ways:

  • A Google Slide presentation, Adobe Spark Video, iMovie or i Movie trailer, or another digital format that is at least 60 seconds, but no longer than 2 minutes
  • Approximately 6 slides to 10 slides. Use the bullets for items to include as a guide

My students are pre-service teachers attending Concordia University, Nebraska, and I was recently teaching them the value of being a connected educator. I created a Flipgrid hoping to get teachers to respond to my students, but when I posted it in early December I believe my timing wasn’t good. If you feel led and would be so inclined, I would really appreciate it if you would leave a video response. Google Duo is a video chat mobile app developed by Google, available on the Android and iOS operating systems. … The app automatically switches between Wi-Fi and cellular networks. A “Knock Knock” feature lets users see a live preview of the caller before answering.

Google Hangouts is a communication platform developed by Google which includes messaging, video chat, SMS and VOIP features. … Google has also stated that Hangouts is designed to be “the future” of its telephony product, Google Voice, and has already integrated some of the capabilities of GoogleVoice into Hangouts.

Each GooseChase game has a list of missions for participants to complete. You can create your mission list using our bank of 100+ tested missions or by designing your own from scratch.  There’s a free version and a paid version.  This would be great for a scavenger hunt activity and can be related to many subjects.

Superbook is an amazing online bible that reads the whole Bible to students, features quality videos of stories, games to learn and go beyond, and questions to help students develop faith.  Website, iPad & Android app, and Google Play app to use with Chromebooks, tablets or any device.

Nearpod. Create slides interspersing polls, video clips, open answer questions, quiz, audio, draw picture or circle answer to get every student responses. Use in guided reading placing picture of story page on a slide, then ask a comprehension question on a slide, then have students circle the character or vocabulary word requested. Can be completed collaboratively by partners or small groups. Enter code I give you to experience one preplanned lesson. You may edit or use already made lessons, create your own, or upload a Powerpoint and change it into a Nearpod lesson interspersing student activities.

Create interactive presentations in Google Slides by using the Add-On Peardeck and adding question slides to engage students. Use this live in class, share the code with another class anywhere to join, or use the “more options” three dots to allow students to self-pace anywhere at any time. (Our Collaborative Creation example)

AnswerGarden Word Cloud generator lets you ask a question and shase a link with students so they can add words to create a word cloud on your topic. Try it!

SignUpGenius is an online tool that lets you schedule meetings easily! You set the dates with times you are available and have students/faculty sign up for the time that works for them! Slick! We use it at NEWLHS for scheduling volunteers for sporting events and Parent/Teacher Conferences.  I’ve used this for several personal events as well.  Free or paid versions.

NowComment is a free online discussion and annotation platform that teachers can use to enrich in-class dialogues and encourage introverted students to speak up. … Skim the comments to quickly assess how students read the text, how well they understood it, what parts they focused on, and any points they missed.

Bitmoji is a fun extension to use through Chrome.  You can insert the pictures in your Gmail or in other Google Docs to add a bit of fun to presentations or documents!

Search for Free Collaborations and consider joining one! You can also pay a yearly membership of $75 for your school and take 10 virtual field trips all over the world! Pretty good deal too! Here is an example of an indepth autopsy offered by The Ohio State University that you can join, and also Daily Life in Ancient Rome by Penn Museum, and a Free example Scientists in Action: Virtual Voyage Through the Universe 2020.

Digital tools enable teachers to share resources and even to co-teach with peers anywhere. Google Docs and Slides documents allow teachers to create a resource together or to share resources they already have.

Consider taking your students on a virtual field trip somewhere around the world to see experience any time period. Here you can visit Yellowstone National Parkthe Louvre Medieval Collection, Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Great Wall of China, or even take a virtual walk on Mars! Try out one of these yourself! Then google a place you would like to take your students with Virtual Field trip and see if one exists!

Have students create a Wordle word cloud using words about a certain topic. Then the rest of the class tries to guess their topic! Check out the Old and New Testament samples!
