1. Upcoming events:
- National Lutheran Schools Week – January 27 – February 2 – A great way to COLLABORATE
- Set up a Mystery Skype with another Lutheran School
- The next workshop date is scheduled for Thursday, February 21
2. Think all the way back to November’s TEC21 Challenges. Did anyone participate in the Hour of Code in December? What happened? What obstacles (if any) did you and your students have to resolve? How did your students respond to the coding activities? What successes did you and your students experience?
3. Have you made any New Year’s Professional Growth Resolutions? They might come in handy for “Celebration Day” in May. Share with the person next to you. Maybe you can become an accountability partner with someone to help each other succeed. Do you remember the working definitions for short- and long-term goals we shared with you back in September?
- SHORT-TERM – Some sort of technology integrating lesson or activity you want to do with your students THIS MONTH.
- LONG-TERM – A major change in the way you teach or manage your classroom. “I want to do less of THAT and more of THIS.” It could include a blog, a website used for flipping your classroom, going paperless with Google Docs, using digital portfolios for student work, integrating project based learning using a specific tool or tools. There are many possibilities. Think of something you’ve seen or heard about that makes you “spark” and think, “Yeah! I want to do more of THAT!”
4. In September, we shared with you ways TEC21 facilitators and teachers connect online to further build and strengthen their professional learning networks. With the start of the second semester, this would be a great time to reflect on the benefits you’ve been experiencing this year by being connected with this learning community and to begin to consider how you will remain connected once this series of face to face workshops comes to an end. We hope you have found it to be a blessing to your teaching ministry and will continue to engage with us for as long as you’re in the teaching ministry!

Mystery Skype Call
Have you ever Skyped or Face Timed with family or friends? Ever joined in on a Google Hangout?
There are a variety of ways to virtually connect your students with other people outside your classroom walls in real time. What kinds of learning possibilities does this technology afford us to do in the classroom? Let’s discuss. Let’s explore. Let’s collaborate with another innovation center!
Tips for a successful Mystery Skype experience:
- Find a teacher who wants to do a Mystery Skype also.
- Skype with each other first (without students) to practice using the platform and to plan for the activity.
- Prepare your students with how the activity works, make assignments for the various roles, and GO FOR IT!

Collaborative Slides Project
With Google apps, the opportunity for collaboration is exponential. At any given time, students can simultaneously add to documents, slides presentations, spreadsheets, maps, etc. We’re going to explore a collaborative Slides presentation. Here are a few quick facts about Slides:
- Slides is like PowerPoint–a customizable presentation app for topics, ideas, and information.
- Presentations can be shared to allow viewing, commenting, and/or editing.
- Students can edit and see others and their edits in real time.
- Slides has a built-in image search that pulls from free use images.
Now that you have a little bit of background, let’s try it for ourselves! You can use the link below, TEC21 Titletown to access the shared Slides presentation, and you can edit your assigned slide to tell us a little bit about your school. Here are a few tips to make things go smoothly…
- Try to stay on your slide! It can get tricky when more than one person is editing!
- If changing the background, don’t apply it to the theme. This will change everyone’s background!
- Try the internal image search to find pictures! If you can’t find what you’re looking for, feel free to open a new tab in your browser and give it the ol’ search in Google. Then, copy and paste when you’ve found the right pic.
- Remember, you can change the layout of your page to whatever you’d like. Feel free to add a text box here or perhaps a picture there! The slide is your canvas!
- If you do something you don’t like… remember, “UNDO” is your friend. Look for that backward-spinning arrow in the toolbar and everything will be alright!
- Have fun!

Google Duo is a video chat mobile app developed by Google, available on the Android and iOS operating systems. … The app automatically switches between Wi-Fi and cellular networks. A “Knock Knock” feature lets users see a live preview of the caller before answering.
Google Hangouts is a communication platform developed by Google which includes messaging, video chat, SMS and VOIP features. … Google has also stated that Hangouts is designed to be “the future” of its telephony product, Google Voice, and has already integrated some of the capabilities of GoogleVoice into Hangouts.
Each GooseChase game has a list of missions for participants to complete. You can create your mission list using our bank of 100+ tested missions or by designing your own from scratch. There’s a free version and a paid version. This would be great for a scavenger hunt activity and can be related to many subjects.
Skype in the classroom is a free community that connects teachers with educators and guest speakers from around the world. It is a website where teachers can find and run Skype lessons for their students.
Superbook is an amazing online bible that reads the whole Bible to students, features quality videos of stories, games to learn and go beyond, and questions to help students develop faith. Website, iPad & Android app, and Google Play app to use with Chromebooks, tablets or any device.
Create, play back, and print sheet music for free. MuseScore is cross-platform, multi-lingual, open source music notation software. It features an easy to use WYSIWYG editor with audio score playback for results that look and sound beautiful. – Windows 10
