How to Obtain 3 Graduate-level Credits Through Your TEC21 Experience

Will you be needing to renew your teaching license soon? Are you thinking about pursuing a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, we encourage you to consider applying to Concordia University, Nebraska, to receive three graduate-level credits for your TEC21 experience. There is no additional work that is required of you and the process is simple. The online application is now open and runs through May 15, 2021. Follow these four easy steps to apply:

First, select the “Apply Here” link to create an account.

Next, complete the fields in the form. Where it asks for Academic Level, select “Non-Degree Coursework”. Where it asks for Entry Term, select “Summer Semester 2021”. Where it asks for Academic Program, select “TEC21”. After completing the remaining fields, select “Create Account”.

Now, check your email for confirmation that your application came through successfully.

Lastly, select the link provided in the confirmation email to make your online payment in the amount of $240 ($80/credit hour) using a debit or credit card. That’s it! You’re done!

On June 1, transcripts will be available upon request. If you ever have questions regarding how these three graduate-level credits could be applied to a master’s degree program now or in the coming years (they are good for 5 years), contact Anna Boriack, Director of Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, Instructional Innovation Specialist. She will be happy to help you. Her email address is anna.boriack@cune.edu. Concordia University, Nebraska is a ministry partner of TEC21, so they may email you from time to time to share opportunities of how these credits could be applied toward graduate-level programs they offer.

Please note: The opportunity detailed above is optional. Additionally, all TEC21 participants will receive a certificate on the final workshop day stating 35 professional development hours have been completed through the TEC21 Workshop Program. How state board of education departments and the 35 LCMS districts recognize these 35 hours of professional development vary from state to state and district to district. (For example, see how the Kansas District of the LCMS Licensure Renewal has a distinct process in place for the teachers serving in this district.) So, be sure to contact your respective state’s board of education department or your LCMS district office if you have any questions on how to renew your certificate or license using your TEC21 experience!

Let’s take some time to reflect on last month’s TEC21 Challenges and share experiences. Share a success, a challenge you experienced or a lesson learned.

Goals

2. Explore video creation and 3d printing tools and resources to use with your students.

3. Design a student-centered project or assessment involving the use of video. Also, create a 3d printable item.

4. Be a resource to another teacher by sharing with them a digital tool, a resource, a learning activity, or an assessment strategy you learned about at today’s workshop.

Video Creation

Screencasting

Screencastify is a free a web-based tool that let’s you record on-screen activity for short tutorials, visual presentations, and communicate while you demonstrate! Free 10 minute recordings of screen only or videocamera of speaker in corner with screen. Publish to YouTube or save as a video file.

Green Screen

By using the Green Screen by DoInk app, anything that is green can be turned into a “green screen,” including napkins, paper plates, plastic table clothes and more!!

The video below is a project I do with 2nd graders where they choose a familiar book with two characters.  They then write their own script about a problem their characters would have, choose a background, draw the characters and then film using the DoInk app.  The project below is my example.

EDUCREATION

Students (and Teachers) can use Educreations to explain their process in math, or expand upon a picture story they created. Simply take a picture of the child’s work or let them work it on the iPad or laptop, then record the student’s voice explaining process. Engage students with video to capture ideas, share instantly, replay anytime. Publish current Educreations video before beginning a new one (only one new project may be worked on at a time in the free version).

Here are my 3rd grade students explaining a science concept using Educreations.  This was a flipped lesson where students explained different facts about space to teach other students.  This lesson took one class period.

Still Shot Videos

Ideas for doing Still Photo Videos.  The kindergartners at my school wrote the script, created storyboards, took the pictures, added their voice and chose the music to the still photo video below.  I added the text boxes by putting the pictures in Google Slides and down loading the pictures with the caption.

3d Printing

What is 3d printing?  Why is it important?

We will try our hand at 3d printing today by using a CAD program to create an original piece that will be printed on the 3d printers in the lab.  The only question is… what do you want to create?

Digital Tools & Resources

GreenScreen by DoInk is my absolute favorite green screen app.  The app costs $2.99 but is worth every penny.  Easy to use by yourself or with students.  Add your own backgrounds to make your pictures and videos come alive!

Edit online faster & easier than ever. Use stock footage, animated titles & green screening. No software to download/install.  Need paid subscription to get Green Screen.

Magisto is a Video Editor and Music Slideshow Maker. Run this Google Play Store android app on Chromebooks. Also check out PowerDirector video editor app & best video maker for Chromebooks.

Google Arts & Culture (formerly Google Art Project) is an online platform through which the public can access high-resolution images of artworks housed in the initiative’s partner museums.  In this app/website you follow National Park Rangers on a remarkable journey in these 360-degree videos. Guides take viewers into the most interesting, yet unknown, places in six different park locations. Choose a park to begin your journey, then after a short introduction, explore locations dragging the mouse or cursor around to view these sites from every angle. As you explore, guides provide additional information on each location.

Simple 3D creating and 3D printing app with step-by-step lessons to teach you how to use their program.  They also have a circuitry section as well where you can learn about the parts of a circuit and how it works.

The Curious George STEM Collection contains a variety of hands-on lesson plans teaching STEM concepts through Curious George videos. Concepts taught include simple machines, measurement, sorting, and more. Each lesson begins by watching a video, then using the concepts presented in the video to participate in a variety of learning activities. In addition to the complete lesson, each activity also includes a variety of additional resources for extending learning. Lessons align to National and Next Generation Science Standards.

Explore the home of George Washington in this interactive website which allows you to take a virtual tour of Mount Vernon that includes videos and detailed facts.  I give students a scavenger hunt to explore the website.

Discover a collection of problem-based learning engineering lessons for building models in the areas of physics and structural and mechanical engineering. For each topic, a video with step by step construction directions accompanies a necessary list of materials. Create your project, and let the explorations begin. Explore ideas given for basic explanations or ideas to test for some of the buildable models.

Animoto allows you and your students create professional looking videos using their easy-to-follow format.  Make sure you sign up for a free educators account.

Discover the earth through visualization and storytelling brought together in a Google Earth collaboration with PBS, National Geographic, and more. Scroll through the site to find ideas to explore, including The 5 Big Beasts of Africa and Sesame Street Around the World. Other ways to explore the site include opening Voyager or look further down the home page to find passports to math, ELA, geography, and social studies. Each passport includes a Google Earth activity and guiding questions for students.

Pixton allows your students to create impressive comics to demonstrate their knowledge with simple click-and-drag tools.

YouTube 360 channel to pan around Mars or other topics! How could your students make a 360 degree movie of your school? Perhaps put it on your website.

Great FREE website that allows you to assign grade level passages to your students, test them on their comprehension with the given questions, and then track their data to see how they perform.

The University of Wisconsin website gives information and examples for each of the moviemaking steps including screenwriting, storyboards, set design, film editing and more.

Math Pickle provides beautiful activities for math classrooms.  The emphasis on elegant graphical design and solid mathematics makes everything here a pleasure.

TEC21 Challenges

  1. Digital: Apply what you learned today by designing a lesson, a student project or an assessment strategy involving the use of video.
  1. Social: Post to the TEC21 Educators Group on Facebook. It can be a comment, an answer to someone’s question, a resource, a picture of you and your students or a link to a completed project your students created.
  2. Spiritual: Be a resource to another teacher on your faculty by sharing with them a digital tool, a resource, a learning activity, or an assessment strategy you learned about at today’s workshop.
  3. Missional: Registration for the TEC21 Workshop Program for the 2021/2022 school is in full swing. Please encourage a fellow teacher to join us next year!
