With the start of the second semester, what a great time to reflect on the benefits of being able to gather together for these monthly sessions to be trained, equipped, encouraged and supported. 2. Have you made any New Year’s Professional Growth Resolutions? They might come in handy for “Celebration Day” in May. Share with the group or the person next to you. Maybe you can become an accountability partner with someone to help each other meet your goal. Do you remember the working definitions for short- and long-term goals we shared with you back in September?

  • SHORT-TERM – Some sort of technology integrating lesson or activity you want to do with your students THIS MONTH.
  • LONG-TERM – A major change in the way you teach or manage your classroom. “I want to do less of THAT and more of THIS.” It could include a blog, a website used for flipping your classroom, going paperless with Google Docs, using digital portfolios for student work, integrating project based learning using a specific tool or tools. There are many possibilities. Think of something you’ve seen or heard about that makes you “spark” and think, “Yeah! I want to do more of THAT!”

Goals

1. Explore the educational value of teacher- and student-centered collaboration.

2. Create a learning activity using collaborative tools and resources to enrich an upcoming lesson or unit you will be teaching.

3. Identify a digital tool, a teaching strategy or learning activity to share with another teacher when you return to your school.

Collaborative Learning Activities

Teachers have been collaborating in a variety of ways for years. For example, have you ever had your students write letters to pen pals, missionaries, or perhaps participate in a Flat Stanley project? Many teachers still engage their students in these types of fun and meaningful lessons! Can you imagine, however, the opportunities you have to enhance these kinds of rich, experiential learning activities by using some of the remarkable digital tools and resources available to us in the classroom today?

There are a number of ways to virtually connect your students with other students or experts outside your classroom walls. Likewise, there are a variety of digital tools that are designed with features that afford students the capability to collaborate in some amazing ways. What kinds of learning activities are possible today when we use things like Skype (or other video chat tool), Flipgrid, Google Slides, Padlet, etc.? How have you used any of these with your students?

Collaborative Activity #3 – Sequence Chains (Relay Cartoonist)

Procedure for a successful virtual Relay Cartoonist game:

  1. Assign a student who will guess the given word.
  2. The guesser will be blindfolded.
  3. The remaining students will be given a word that they will draw.
  4. Each student will be given 5 seconds to contribute to the drawing.
  5. When the remaining students are done, the guesser will remove his/her blindfold and try to guess the drawing.

The GooseChase platform lets you create and facilitate a customized scavenger hunt in minutes. … Gather the participants together and have at least one person per team download the GooseChase app. You can also use this remotely

Padlet is an online virtual “bulletin” board, where students and teachers can collaborate, reflect, share links and pictures, in a secure location. Padlet allows users to create a hidden wall with a custom URL.

Ecosia is a search engine dedicated to change the planet while searching for what you need. Not as powerful in terms of finding information, but powerful for what it can do for our planet.

Twiddla is a tool to mark up websites, graphics, and photos, or start drawing on a blank canvas. Browse the web with your students or make that remote tutoring session more productive than ever. No plug-ins, downloads, or firewall voodoo – it’s all here, ready to go when you are. Browser-agnostic, user-friendly.

Tinkercad is a simple, online 3D design and 3D printing app for everyone. Tinkercadis used by designers, hobbyists, teachers, and kids, to make toys, prototypes, home decor, Minecraft models, jewelry – the list is truly endless!

WatchKin Click on Watchkin.com. Copy and paste the URL of the video you want to view into the Watchkin search box and you’ll be taken to a clean page to watch your video. No distracting or potentially offensive videos or side ads will appear. To search for more videos, type your search terms in the search box above, or on any Watchkin page. You can drag and drop the Watchkinize button up to your toolbar to use whenever you show videos to your class. YouTube is a video sharing service where users can watch, like, share, comment, and upload their own videos. The video service can be accessed on PCs, laptops, tablets and via mobile phones.


ePals offers pairing services for schools from around the world that are eager to learn from one another. Classrooms can access over 200 countries via live video chat, creating a unique learning community where young people experience a little bit of life in a foreign country while forming dialogues and lasting friendships. ePals represents the world’s largest network of K-12 classrooms, and best of all, it’s free.


Mystery Skype is an education game, invented by teachers, played by two classrooms on Skype. The aim of the game is to guess the location of the other classroom by asking each other questions. It has totally transformed the way students learn about the world in my school. The link will bring you to the list of Lutheran educators who are willing to collaborate.



Slide Carnival allows you to add some pizzaz to your slideshow.  Here you, or your students, can use templates and themes to add a little something more to any presentation.


This link shows you how you can create a virtual escape room using google slides, docs, and forms.


Free RiceHave students make a difference by practicing their math, chemistry, anatomy, geography, foreign language, vocabulary, grammar, humanities and even for the SAT. “For each answer they get right, 10 grains of rice is donated  through the World Food Programme to help end hunger.”


Class Dojo ClassDojo is an online classroom-management platform that helps teachers record and track their students’ behaviors in real time while also giving students instant feedback. Much of this happens publicly through the use of a visual tracker, often displayed to the class on a screen or interactive whiteboard. Teachers can keep some information private depending on how they choose to set things up. The platform is designed to help individual students, as well as entire classes, identify areas for improved behavior and set related goals. You can also divide students into groups and have them work together to gain points!  Think of the Harry Potter house system!


Scattergories.com a creative-thinking category-based party game that can also be used during the class.


Bingobaker.com Find and customize one of the thousands of ready-made bingo cards, or use the simple bingo card generator to create your own. Then print as many cards as you need. You can even play virtual bingo using a computer, smartphone or tablet. It’s fast and easy.


Jigsaw a cooperative learning strategy that enables each student of a “home” group to specialize in one aspect of a topic (for example, one group studies habitats of rainforest animals, another group studies predators of rainforest animals).

TEC21 Challenges

  1. Digital: Engage your students in a collaborative learning activity to enrich a lesson or unit. You might even consider teaming with another teacher on your faculty or one from anywhere around the world.
  2. Social: Post to the TEC21 Educators Group on Facebook. It can be a comment, an answer to someone’s question, a resource, or a picture of you and your students engaging in a collaborative learning activity.
  3. Spiritual: Be a resource for one of your colleagues at your school by sharing a digital tool, a teaching strategy or learning activity.
  4. Season 13 cohorts are forming now! Please encourage a fellow teacher to join us next year! Personal testimonies go a long way, so we would be most grateful if you would help us by thinking of a fellow teacher or teachers that you could encourage to register for the 2021/2022 school year. They could be teachers from your school or any other school for that matter. With your help we will be able to impact more teachers and their students for the sake of the gospel. Share with them how valuable it’s been to you to be able to connect with other teachers serving in Lutheran schools outside of your school building and the positive impact it’s having on you and your students.
