As the year progresses and relationships grow, this time naturally becomes a time of reconnecting to find out what’s been going on in everyone’s lives since the last workshop.

1. Upcoming events:

  • The next workshop date is scheduled for Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 9:30 am.
  • I look forward to learning with some of you at LEC from November 19-21.
  • #LuthEd Twitter chats take place on Monday evenings from 8:00-9:00CST throughout the school year.

2. For anyone interested in receiving college credit? The application period is OPEN! Remember that TEC21 is considered a second semester class–EDUC 513. To receive college credit, apply online between today – January 31, 2018.

Khan Academy
Khan Academy – 3 options for hour long coding experience (drawing, webpages, data bases)
Code.org
Code.org – a website that has Hour of Code activities along with other self-paced coding courses for all grade levels.
Tynker
Tynker – a guided learning system that teaches kids to code by building mobile games.  Has different levels for any grade.
Made with Code (by Google)
Made with Code – a site where students can learn and practice the logic behind programming while completing a number of different projects.  Great for collaboration and great for appealing to girls.

Assessment

Formative Assessment
Formative – create quizzes, exit tickets, quick questions, interactive worksheets that allow students to enter as a guest with a quick code or as part of a class.  Teacher can give live feedback while students are answering.  You can insert pictures, videos, PDFs, etc.  Includes a drawing function where students can draw pictures or handwrite answers.  Students join at  goformative.com/join.  Here is a video that shows some of what you can do on Formative.

Socrative – create quizzes, exit tickets, or quick questions that students answer on their device.  A game function called “Space Race” allows for students to compete individually or in teams on quiz questions.

Gaming
Kahoot – create and play fun learning games for free.  This one is great for teams or in-class play.  Fun music!   Students join the game on a handheld device using just a PIN (no login required) on website:  kahoot.it

Quizizz – create quizzes that can be played either live or assigned as homework.  This one is better for a calmer experience or for posting on your classroom website.  Students join the game on a handheld device using just a PIN (no login required) on the website:   join.quizizz.com

Performance Tasks – A performance task is any learning activity or assessment that asks students to perform to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and proficiency. Performance tasks yield a tangible product and/or performance that serve as evidence of learning.  Performance tasks put students into roles that allow them to complete a real-life task.  Examples in:

flippity
Flippity –  quickly and easily turn a Google spreadsheet into memory flash cards, a quiz show, mad libs, word search, crossword puzzle, badge tracker, and more!  Can be accessed as an “add on” to Google sheets.

Bible Trivia Questions and Answers – lots of questions and answers for young and old and from the Old and New Testaments.
timer
Countdown Timer – allows you to select and save from multiple timers.  Use them to manage individual or group work time.
fakebook
Fakebook – a classroom tool that allows teachers and students to create imaginary profile pages for study purposes.
mathematics
Dan Meyer’s 3 Act Math – Problem solving for K-12 mathematics.  Problems come with a video that describes the problem and then adds additional parameters.  Last is a description of the solution or of one possible solution.  Check out his great TED talk to see some of the background information and how to use his 3 Act Math exercises.  And if you really like his stuff, you can follow him on his blog!
Ten Marks is a free math site created by Amazon, which allows students to practice math skills with scaffolded lessons, videos, and embedded hints. The free version only allows you to utilize content from one grade level and doesn’t have the same reporting capabilities as the premium accounts but it’s a good option for extra practice.
GrammarFlip in the spirit of the “Flipped Classroom” is a series of videos and practice activities that students can access at home or school for reinforcement.
The History Project allows you to organize memories in an interactive timeline.  Users have the ability to link images, audio, video, and text documents on their timeline.I wish I had this as a high school history teacher, it would make a great end of the year review.
TweenTribune – published by the Smithsonian.  Features topics about animals, fashion, entertainment, school, science, technology, national and world news written by kids and professional journalists.  Articles are available in 3 different Lexile levels and can be search by topic or grade level.
Thinglink takes a static picture and makes it come to life using radio buttons, which can include text, links, and videos. Share your Thinglink with your class across any device.
EdPuzzle – easy way to engage students with videos.  Crop and edit videos, add your comments (written or audio), insert quiz questions, etc.  Get reports back on student progress, time spent, and understanding.
Scholastic –  excellent resources for teachers.  Strategies, ideas, student activities, ebooks, etc.  Sign up today for free teaching ideas, lesson plans, online activities, tips for your classroom, and much more.
Coggle is a collaborative mind-mapping tool.  Free account allows you to make unlimited mind maps.  Can be used for presenting information, notetaking, planning a story, outlining, etc.
Photos for Class is a storage of photos that are safe and appropriate for school use and are licensed for public use through Creative Commons.  The downloaded photos automatically cite the author and the license information.
Reformation 2017 – a website with a bunch of great resources for Reformation:  articles, videos, Bible studies, blogs, events, and other resources.

TEC21 Challenges

1. Design a formative or summative assessment strategy or activity to use with your students and have it include a technology component to it (web- or tablet-based app).

2. During the week of December 4–10, plan to have your students join millions of students around the world in participating in an “Hour of Code” (A great activity to engage your students in during the craziness of December.)

3. Post a comment, link, or student work to the TEC21’s online Google+ community.

4. Be a resource to at least one new person on your faculty before we meet again.

5.  TEC21 Registration for the 2017/2018 school year opens on January 2, 2018. Encourage a fellow teacher to be a TEC21 participant next year! Share with them the value of being connected with other Lutheran school educators and the impact it’s had on you, your classroom and your students. Thank you for being an ambassador for TEC21!
