Announcements & Review

1. Upcoming events:

  • The next workshop date is scheduled for Thursday, April 5.
  • #LuthEd Twitter chats take place on Monday evenings from 8:00-9:00CST throughout the school year.

2. A final reminder that the application deadline to receive graduate-level credits is on January 31, 2018.

How to apply:

  • Step 1 – Select the following link and search for the form with your facilitator’s name on it: EDUC 513 Form.
  • Step 2 – Download and print off a copy. You’ll need to mail this form to Concordia University along with a check.
  • Step 3 – Submit an online application on the CUNE website found here – https://ss2.cune.edu/OAP/apply/index.cfm.

As a reminder, Concordia University–Nebraska is one of our “Premiere Sponsors”. We have a special arrangement with them where you may receive three graduate-level credits for your participation in our program at a cost of $80/credit hour. This has helped some teachers meet recertification requirements in order to renew their teaching license while others have used the credits to advance to a new tier on their school’s adopted pay scale. Additionally, if a teacher is interested in pursuing a M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction or M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction with Instructional Technology Leadership, these same three graduate-level credits would take the place of EDUC 506 – Integrating Technology in the Classroom in both of those masters programs.

3. Have you made any New Year’s Professional Growth Resolutions? They might come in handy for “Celebration Day” in May. Share with the person next to you. Maybe you can become an accountability partner with someone to help each other succeed. Do you remember the working definitions for short- and long-term goals we shared with you back in September?

  • SHORT-TERM – Some sort of technology integrating lesson or activity you want to do with your students THIS MONTH.
  • LONG-TERM – A major change in the way you teach or manage your classroom. “I want to do less of THAT and more of THIS.” It could include a blog, a wiki, a web site used for flipping your classroom, going paperless with Google Docs, using digital portfolios for student work, integrating project based learning using a specific tool or tools – there are many possibilities. Think of something you’ve seen or heard about that makes you “spark” and think, “Yeah! I want to do more of THAT!”

4. In September, we shared with you ways TEC21 facilitators and teachers connect online to further build and strengthen their professional learning networks. With the start of the second semester, this would be a great time to reflect on the benefits you’ve been experiencing this year by being connected with this learning community and to begin to consider how you will remain connected once this series of face to face workshops come to an end. We hope you have found it to be a blessing to your teaching ministry and will continue to engage with us for as long as you’re in the teaching ministry.

Mystery Skype Call

Have you ever Skyped or Face Timed with family or friends? Ever joined in on a Google Hangout?

There are a variety of ways to virtually connect your students with other people outside your classroom walls in real time. What kinds of learning possibilities does this technology afford us to do in the classroom? Let’s discuss. Let’s explore. Let’s collaborate with another workshop center!

Tips for a successful Mystery Skype experience:

  1. Find a teacher who wants to do a Mystery Skype also.
  2. Skype with each other first (without students) to practice using the platform and to plan for the activity.
  3. Prepare your students with how the activity works, make assignments for the various roles and GO FOR IT!

Many supplemental resources can be found on the web to help plan for a successful lesson. Here are a couple to get you started:

Collaborative Map Project

Let’s explore two common methods used when creating a Google map collaboratively.

Method #1–Manually click and type to add data to a map

1. To edit the map below by this method, begin by clicking HERE to open it in a new window. If you’re not already signed in to Google, you’ll need to do that first. Then follow the directions below:

  • To place a marker, type the name of the location in the SEARCH BAR. Google maps will take you directly to the location. Then, select “+add to map” and begin to edit.

or

  • A second way to add your information to the marker’s description box is to select the MARKER symbol right below the search bar. Your cursor will take on the look of a PLUS sign. Navigate manually to your destination point by using the grab and zoom features. Once you’ve narrowed your search, single-click on the map and fill in the information.

2. Great work! Now search the web and add a picture that captures the essence of why this place is so special to you.

Method #2–Upload data from a spreadsheet

1. First, you’ll need to complete a Google form (like the one below) to collect the data to be uploaded.

2. Once the data has been gathered, upload the responses (csv.file) into the map (in this case, to display everyone’s favorite destination place). You can view this video tutorial as a reference to learn and/or review the process – http://goo.gl/8oNF5r.

3. Let’s try it! Submit the following form and your facilitator can demonstrate how it’s done.

Hangouts bring conversations to life with photos, emoji, and even group video calls for free. Connect with friends across computers, Android, and Apple devices.

A useful resource online for students to “chat” and collaborate. Simply create a room, give the students the website and code, and they can join the fun. You can open a room for an hour or a month! Here’s a link to a sample chat room another facilitator created: TEC21Pville. (Grade 3+)

As with other Google apps, Google Drawings allows students to collaborate–this time in a paint-like program. Use it to create diagrams, illustrations, and infographics, etc. (Grade 2+)

National Lutheran Schools’ Week is right around the corner! What better way to collaborate than with other Lutherans as they travel to faraway places spreading the Gospel and God’s love for us. Sign up to be a part of the mission trip or view videos from previous trips around the world!

TEC21 Challenges

1. Plan to virtually connect your students with another classroom. Share your experience!

3.  Be a resource to at least one new person on your faculty before we meet again.
