4. Let’s take this time to reflect on last month’s TEC21 Challenges and share experiences. What happened? Were you successful? Did you come across any challenges?

Goals

1. Discover the value of video creation.

2. Explore video creation tools and resources to use with your students.

3. Identify a tool or resource to share with another teacher at your school.

Video Creation

Student Video Creations
Pray and Be WatchfulStudent chapel video about Jesus in Gethsemane produced by Doni Douglass using iMovie Trailer. Published to YouTube on April 14, 2015.
Powtoon Animation
Powtoon lets you drag and drop or fill in ready made templates to create animated videos. This is my example book report.
Video Paper Slides
The Paperside Video. Rapid Video Creation for the Classroom by Dr. Lodge McCammon
Green Screen
Easy-to-Use Green Screen by Do Ink App Enables Creation of Green Screen Effects on iPhone and iPad
Some great student projects. Film them in front of a green screen, then insert any picture that they can tell what they learned about it: historical location, weather map, diagram of human body, etc.
Green Screen Tutorial for Do Ink. Sample Do Ink video on President's Day
Make a simple green screen background by covering a door with green construction paper, felt, cloth, or plastic table cloth, or paint one wall green!
Or try TouchCast Studio on iPad to create a newscast or other video with video apps you can bring in: websites, pictures, calendar, Twitter, maps, etc.

Digital Storytelling

Adobe Spark Video allows you to combine videos, pictures, text, and provided icons with music and audio to create a video. Here is a tutorial video to explain how. Only one component per slide. Automatically includes a list of references for images selected. Students can create these quite quickly and add their voice to tell about what they learned.

Flipped Classroom
Let’s Use Video to Reinvent Education – TED Talk by Salmon Kahn

Check out Khan Academy for subject by grade level from K-12.

Interactive, engaging Pear Deck presentations stimulate discussion with formative assessment in real time. Google Slides Add-On. Create slides where students input short answers or numbers, explore websites, or answer multiple choice questions. Displays student responses anonymously. When you close the session it saves student responses in a spreadsheet. Works like Nearpod. Let’s try it out! joinpd.com Now try making your own Pear Deck using this tutorial.

Little or No Prep Tools & Resources

Educreations. Best screencasting tool I use because it’s so easy. Change background, write while you talk, capture images and voice. Students can use to explain their process in math, or expand upon a picture story they created. Simply take a picture of the child’s work or let them work it on the iPad or laptop, then record the student’s voice explaining process. Engage students with video to capture ideas, share instantly, replay anytime. Publish current Educreations video before beginning a new one (only one new project may be worked on at a time). Here is a sample I made using Educreations to demonstrate how to create a screencast. Keep it short, less than 4 minutes for teaching and 1 minute for students demonstrating learning, and it doesn’t have to be perfect.
Screencastify
Screencast-O-Matic is a web-based tool that let’s you record on-screen activity for short tutorials, visual presentations, and communicate while you demonstrate! Free 15 minute recordings of screen only or videocamera of speaker in corner with screen. Publish to YouTube or save as a video file. Or try a similar tool Screencastify as a Chrome Add-On with 10 minute recordings.
imovie3
iMovie Trailer Planning Sheets. Take pictures or video to fill in each box. Add text. Produce! Share! Also take videos in iMovie and edit.
Greenscreen icon
Do Ink makes it easy to create incredible green screen videos and images right on your iPad or iPhone. The app lets you combine photos and videos from the camera roll with live images from your iPad or iPhone’s camera. Featured in “Best New Apps in Education.”
touchcast
TouchCast Studio app is now free! Annotate, explain and present anything easily and quickly with TouchCast Studio. Add webpages, files, images, videos… nearly anything! Then record or live stream* and share across the web. Watch my sample “Presidential Debate” for fun and see how you can bring in websites, Twitter feeds, images, Google documents and more to your screencast. Realistic backgrounds allow you to film a sports clip, news clip, and more. Note that I made this screencast in front of a green screen so this newsroom background shows up. I didn’t write out a script. You don’t want to spend too much time on these screencasts to make them doable.

Toontastic 3D is both an app and a Google Play app on Chromebooks. It lets you create animated stories by selecting setting and characters, then using your voice to tell the story as you move the characters. Select Historical Films, Mysteries, Social Studies, School Reports, Documentaries, and more! Look fabulous.
